Building a Life Around Dogs: Katie Ast’s Journey from Kennels to Just Dog People

As a lifelong dog lover, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting some truly inspiring people in Johnston County, but none have left an impression quite like Katie Ast. Katie is the owner of Just Dog People, a local gem that has become the go-to spot for dog lovers in the area. Her journey from starting a boarding kennel with her mom to running a full-service pet care business is a story of passion, perseverance, and a love for dogs that’s undeniable.

Katie’s love for dogs began early in life. Growing up in Atlanta, Georgia, she had a golden retriever named Annie who was her best friend. While many kids dream of becoming veterinarians, Katie quickly realized that path wasn’t for her due to her blood fainter condition. But that didn’t stop her from pursuing a career that revolved around dogs. From working at boarding kennels to demonstrating pet food, her career trajectory always came back to her one true love—dogs.

After moving to North Carolina, Katie and her mom opened Bone Voyage Pet Resort, a boarding kennel that they operated for twelve years before selling it in 2015. Katie took a brief break from the hustle of running a business, but by 2016, she was back at it—this time with her husband Jason—opening Just Dog People.

The Birth of Just Dog People

I’ll never forget the first time I walked into Just Dog People. It’s clear from the moment you step inside that this isn’t just another pet store. Katie and Jason opened it with a simple idea in mind: to make dog ownership easier and more enjoyable for everyone. But it all started with a small frustration.

Katie and Jason had five dogs at home, and bathing them in their bathtub was, well, a bit of a nightmare. So, they decided to build a self-serve dog wash. But what started as a way to solve their own problem soon turned into a full-service, community-focused pet business. Katie tells me the self-serve dog wash is just one of the ways they help local pet owners live better lives with their dogs.

“We wanted to make it easier for people to wash their dogs without the hassle,” Katie says. “And it’s not just about washing your dog. It’s about creating an experience for both the dogs and their owners.”

A Hub for Dog Lovers

What makes Just Dog People so special isn’t just the services they offer—it’s the relationships they’ve built with the community. Katie and I spoke about how she’s not just a business owner; she’s a part of the family for many of her customers. She’s seen families come and go, and many of them have been part of her journey since she opened Bone Voyage.

One story Katie shared with me really stuck out. She told me about a woman who took a dog training class at Bone Voyage while she was pregnant. Years later, the same woman came to Just Dog People with her child, now an owner of a dog of his own. That’s the kind of bond Katie and her business create—not just with the pets, but with the people who love them.

“The best part of this business is building relationships with families over time,” Katie says with a smile.

Pampering Pets with a Personal Touch

It’s easy to see why Just Dog People has become a favorite among pet owners. From dog food to toys, treats, and everything in between, the store has it all. But the highlight for many is the Seasonal Dog Wash. I love that they change the shampoo with the seasons—right now, they’re offering a coconut-papaya combination, complete with a tropical cookie treat for the dogs once they’re done. And yes, the dogs leave the store wearing cute bandanas.

Katie joked with me, “You should always bribe your dog after a bath.” I had to laugh because, as any dog owner knows, the bath may be necessary, but the bribe is definitely deserved.

The self-serve stations are also impressive—elevated tubs with ramps for easy access, towels, brushes, blow dryers, and even a little caddy with everything you need. It’s clear that Katie and her team take the time to make sure the experience is easy and enjoyable for both dogs and their owners.

“We make sure everything is clean between uses,” Katie adds. “That’s something that’s really important to us. We don’t want any cross-contamination.”

Expanding Services to Meet the Community’s Needs

What started as a small dog wash quickly grew into a full-service pet care business. Katie told me that over time, they expanded their offerings, including dog grooming, training, and product recommendations. But one of the most popular services at Just Dog People has been their harness fitting section, where they carefully measure each dog to ensure a proper, safe fit.

Harnesses can be tricky. They aren’t one-size-fits-all,” Katie explains. “We help our customers find the right one for their dog’s shape and needs.” The personalized service goes a long way in ensuring that every dog is safe and comfortable.

The Future of Just Dog People

The work doesn’t stop at the dog wash and product shelves for Katie and Jason. They recently expanded to include a 2,000 square foot training facility, which they use for classes and events like their Naughty or Nice Santa event. It’s a fun way for families to bring their dogs to meet either Santa or the Grinch, depending on how their dogs have behaved that year.

For Katie, building a business around dogs isn’t just about providing a service—it’s about creating a life. “I get to spend every day with my dogs,” she says, “They go to work with me, they play in the dog room, and they even steal treats when no one’s looking!”
