A Culinary Tapestry in Johnston County

As the host of The Best of Johnston County Podcast, I’ve had the pleasure of exploring some of the most vibrant and community-focused spots around, and the Old North State Food Hall in Selma is one of them. Nestled beside JR on 67 Junior Road, this food hall is more than just a place to grab a bite—it’s a celebration of flavors, community, and the spirit of Johnston County.

My Journey into the Heart of Flavor

When I first met Lorie Jones, the force behind this bustling hub, I was struck by her journey. Originally from Clarion, Pennsylvania, Lorie dove into the food service world with nothing but a smile and a passion for great food. From her early days as a server to managing national chains like Denny’s, Olive Garden, and Starbucks, her career has been all about hands-on learning and a love for making every guest feel welcome. When the chance came to run the food hall, she saw an opportunity to combine her extensive experience with her commitment to community—a decision that has transformed the space into a local landmark.

A Feast of Flavors and Experiences

Walking into the Food Hall, you’re immediately enveloped by an array of culinary delights. I’ve savored everything from a gourmet hot dog that perfectly balances simplicity and innovation, to the enormous, authentic Cuban sandwiches at Aroma de Cuba, where every bite feels like a mini celebration of culture. And then there’s Mr. Outrageous—whose burgers and cheesesteaks are as bold as his name suggests.

Other experiences that have caught my attention include:

  • Luna Pizza: Their stone-fired pizzas are a sight to behold, cooked in an 800-degree oven to perfection.
  • JoCo Coffee: They kick off the day at seven with a robust coffee selection and even boba teas for something a little different.
  • White Swan: Serving up Southern classics like fried and barbecue chicken, they bring a comforting taste to the region.
  • Modern Conveniences: The ease of scanning a QR code at your table to order brings a modern touch to this community space.

Where Community Meets Creativity

What truly sets this food hall apart is its role as a community hub. I’ve spent evenings at the adjoining Longleaf Tavern, where themed karaoke nights—whether it’s an ugly sweater party or a pajama night—create a festive atmosphere that’s hard to forget. The space also hosts a variety of local classes and events, like Bob Ross brew sessions and stained glass workshops, which highlight the creative spirit that makes Johnston County so unique.

Moreover, the hall supports several local initiatives:

  • Southland Car Shows: These events not only bring together car enthusiasts but also support community scholarships.
  • NextGen Job Training: By offering job training opportunities, the hall helps local talent grow and succeed.
  • Robotics Program: It’s heartening to see a dedicated space for our local robotics team, emphasizing a commitment to nurturing young innovators.

A Dynamic, Ever-Evolving Experience

One of the things I love most about the Food Hall is its dynamic nature. It serves as a launchpad for emerging food vendors—often a trial run for food trucks looking to transition into brick-and-mortar success. With an ever-changing lineup, each visit promises something new. And with entree prices averaging around $10 to $14, sides at $3 to $5, and irresistible desserts, it’s a destination that welcomes every appetite.

A Space Built with Care

Every detail in the Food Hall has been carefully thought out. From the spotless restrooms that make a great first impression to the expansive parking that accommodates buses and RVs, it’s clear that Lorie and her team have a genuine commitment to both quality and community. Even the dog-friendly patio—complete with a dog park—reminds me that this is a place where everyone, from families to pet lovers, can feel right at home.

For me, the Old North State Food Hall isn’t just about the food—it’s about the shared experiences, the smiles exchanged over a meal, and the spirit of community that makes Johnston County so special.
